"Baby Jack" Case Study
Baby Jack was born at term gestation with a left diaphragmatic hernia (herniation of small and large bowel as well as abdominal organs into the chest area). Initially, the infant was placed on a heart-lung bypass machine (ECMO) and received high frequency ventilation in preparation for his two surgeries.
"Baby Michael" Case Study
Baby Michael was born prematurely at 25 weeks gestation while in transit to the hospital. His mother had significant psychosocial issues, including drug abuse. Upon arrival to the emergency room, he was noted to be having difficulty breathing and was immediately placed on mechanical ventilation.
"Baby Paula" Case Study
Baby Paula was born at 30 weeks, 6 days gestation and was experiencing multiple episodes of apnea (cessation of breathing) requiring continuous ventilator support.
